Demand response

Load control switches

The load control switch is an integral component of a demand response (DR) system. Installed at the consumer end of the distribution network, this relay lets a utility manage the power drawn by large motors and drives. Typical applications include air conditioners, water heaters and irrigation systems. The load control switch is one of Eaton's demand response solutions.

Core features

  • Radio frequency-enabled (RF)
  • Advanced messaging capabilities
  • Intelligent control algorithm
  • Protects consumer equipment against brownout damage

Balance load shed with customer comfort

While HVAC load management is essential for effective demand response, irrigation systems and water heaters can also have a significant impact on demand. Demand response equipment helps utilities shed load at times of high demand but can reduce customer comfort. Eaton's TrueCycle technology intelligently adjusts air conditioner operation based on the normal running patterns within the home. These smart TrueCycle technology algorithms learn and understand the customer's usage patterns. This reduces the impact on the consumer of load shedding actions so that a complete HVAC shutdown is avoided while still achieving the necessary demand reduction.

Equipment protection and grid reliability features

Eaton load control switches can shed load automatically if supply problems are detected. The devices also include cold-load pick-up and short cycle protection features for consumer equipment protection. The load control switches can also help support the grid by responding to frequency and voltage problems.

Load control switches

These LCR load control switches are offered as part of Eaton's demand response solution.

  • Low-current relay is for applications where  a control circuit to a large load (i.e. HVAC) is being interrupted
  • High-current relay (30 Amp) is for applications where the main power to the load (i.e. water heaters, split systems, pool pumps) is being interrupted
