A beam smoke detector works by sending an invisible infrared (IR) beam of light across the protected area to a receiver. The receiver will then measure the strength of the beam. If smoke is present in the air, this will obscure the beam of light therefore decreasing the strength of the beam received. When enough smoke is in the air the IR light level will drop below a set threshold, which then triggers an alarm condition.
EF-CBD50 uses the reflective method. This means that the IR transmitter and receiver are housed in the same unit. A reflector is placed at the opposite end of the protected area to the detector. The reflector bounces the light beam back to the detector for processing. This is a widely used method that offers reduced installation cost and time, compared to having the transmitter and receiver as separate units.
The beam detector incorporates a bank of buttons conveniently placed on the front of the unit. This area also includes LEDs that clearly indicate the operational status of the device. This means that product setup and further adjustments can be carried out intuitively, without the need to remove the product from the installation point.
Once the hardware has been installed, the detector buttons can be used to steer a targeting laser onto the reflector. Auto-alignment can then be initiated with the press of a button. In addition, the required detection sensitivity can be set using the settings switches.
Not only does the EN and UL certified reflective beam detector have dynamic beam phasing that prevents interference between detectors that face each other, or others that are in irregular configurations, it can also adapt to environmental changes.
Building movement
When installed correctly, the detector can adjust its own alignment to compensate for natural building movement over time.
Changes in lighting
Light cancellation technology compensates for high levels of sunlight and artificial lighting that would otherwise cause nuisance alarms.
Dirt and dust build-up
In dusty or dirty environments the detector can compensate for gradual build-up of contamination that would interfere with the IR beam.
