Adding digital performance to MCCB

Predictable and safer operation with digital Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB)

In addition to the overload protection, MCCB with digital trip units can even increase the availability of production lines and the security of the personnel working with them. Thanks to the lifecycle management predictive maintenance becomes an easy exercise. Integrated arc flash protection improves safety during maintenance and integrated metering can be used for condition monitoring and energy-management systems.

Lifecycle management

The tripping of a circuit breaker due to an overcurrent is important as it protects machines and other assets from damage. On the other hand, a circuit breaker trip usually leads to a production interruption. Once the root cause for the incident is eliminated, operations should re-start as soon as possible. But is the breaker still in the right condition to go into live operation again? Or should it be exchanged to avoid malfunction and even bigger outages with the next overload current or short circuit? Read our white paper about how the lifecycle management function in the new digital MCCB trip unit can help you run your business safely at all times.

Above-standard safety

In high-profile production sites, or for operations with critical processes, every interruption can be extremely costly. Therefore maintenance may required under live voltage circumstances. Digital MCCB from Eaton provide simple-to-use arc flash reduction systems that are designed precisely for such maintenance services. While working on the cabinet or machine, the system provides a safer working environment and the system can be automatically reset to normal operation when the cabinet doors are closed. Thus production lines can run without interruption while the maintenance teams benefit from maximum safety.

Energy management according to ISO 50001

The fact that the exploitation of resources cannot be continued in its current form is becoming the central political issue in more and more regions of the world. The pressure on governments and the industry to implement sustainable measures to reduce energy consumption is steadily increasing. Many governments have already implemented programmes to support companies that are implementing energy-saving measures. In Europe, the access to such benefits is very often tied to the introduction of an energy-management system according to ISO 50001. We have summarised what needs to be considered when planning to introduce an energy-management system on the following page.

Smart factory using a digital main switch for their energy-management system

If smart factories want to reduce their energy consumption continuously, the introduction of an energy-management system according to ISO 50001 is the first important step. But only if the measurement accuracy of the components used is sufficient and the collection of data is really consistent, can sustainable results be achieved.

The Eaton smart factory in Schrems produces several thousand electrical switchgear units every year. Their annual consumption of energy is as high as 111 MWh. Installing an energy-management system according to ISO 50001 helps them to save 2% of energy each year. Thanks to the new digital MCCB NZM, the machine-capturing of data and the communication to the central Manufacturing Execution System (MES) has become much easier than in the past.

Not-a-boring competition

The ‘TUM Boring’ student team is taking part in Elon Musk's competition to develop the world's fastest tunnel-boring machine and has made it into the finals. In light of the importance of more sustainable transportation, one of conditions of the contest was to measure and control the energy consumption of the machine. Eaton is supporting the project with its digital NZM and other products.

Make your operations safer, more predictable and more energy-efficient with digital moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB) NZM

Thanks to the wide variety of available field bus communication systems and the comprehensive programme of accessories, the digital moulded case circuit breaker NZM can be easily integrated into machines and power-distribution systems in smart factories. It can be perfectly combined with the other Eaton circuit protection and motor control devices to build reliably operating machines and systems. The highly accurate metering capabilities of the breaker make it the ideal device to provide energy data into energy-management systems that fulfil the requirements of ISO 50001.

xSpider design tool for low-voltage networks

The xSpider software system is a graphically orientated design system for the dimensioning of low-voltage networks fitted with Eaton brand circuit-protection equipment. It calculates voltage drops, load distributions and short-circuit currents for radial, as well as meshed networks, and carries out a subsequent check on the suitability of the cables and protection equipment used. The software is intended primarily for designers and computational engineers.
