Arc Quenching Substation with Vacuum Fault Interrupter Transformer (AQS-VFI)

Arc quenching substations take the great features of Arc Quenching switchgear, and pairs it with Eaton’s Arc-Reduction Vacuum Fault Interrupter transformer (AR-VFI) extending the zone of protection from the line-side of the low-voltage circuit breaker to the transformer secondary. Arc Quenching Switchgear reduces incident energy to a level where the switchgear will survive an arc flash event, while providing enhanced safety and minimal equipment downtime.

VOLTAGE
Primary: Up to 38kV
Secondary: Up to 600V
TRANSFORMER
500 to 6,000 kVA
SHORT-CIRCUIT RATING
Primary: Up to 50 kA
Secondary: Up to 100 kA

Core features

  • Low-voltage switchgear is certified UL 1558, third party tested to ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7, Type 2B test guide in standard NEMA 1 construction
  • Short-circuit withstand ratings up to 100 kA at 635 Vac
  • Short-time withstand current rating, 85 kA for 30 cycles
  • <4 ms arc quenching time
  • [AR-VFI] Available up to 38 kV and up to 50 kA (with PRCLF fuses)
  • [AR-VFI] Up to 150 kV BIL

Understanding arc-flash safety

There are multiple options available when specifying low-voltage switchgear with a focus on arc-flash safety.

Safety

With the capabilities of the Arc-Reduction VFI transformer (AR-VFI) and the Arc Quenching Magnum low-voltage switchgear, the AQS-VFI provides reduced incident energy and hazard exposure.

Space

The AQS-VFI is a substation that provides close-coupling between the AR-VFI and the Arc Quenching Switchgear providing one of the smallest footprints on the market

Reduced downtime

Arc Quenching Switchgear employs the Eaton Arc Flash Relay which utilizes advanced algorithms to prevent nuisance operation of the Arc Quenching Device (AQD). Should an arc flash incident occur, restoring service is accomplished by returning the switchgear to normal operating condition and replacing the draw-out AQD which can then reduce downtime from weeks or months to hours.
