Power factor correction capacitors

AutoVAR 300

The Eaton AutoVAR 300 is designed for low voltage applications with a variable system load where maintaining a precise target power factor is required. With a heavy-duty, three-phase capacitor construction in a small, wall-mount footprint, this product is ideal for applications with little space to spare. Its advanced control system ensures constant monitoring and adjustments to maintain optimal performance.

Up to
250kVAR per bank
Up to
690V
Small step sizes
for tight regulation

Core features

  • Wallmount design is ideal for minimum space requirements
  • Programmable to automatically add/subtract capacitor stages to maintain preset target power factor
  • Optional heavy-duty, three-phase capacitor construction
  • Automatic sensing of kVAR values per step
  • Optional communications capable controller (RS-485/Modbus®)

Basics of power factor

Power factor is driven by the number of inductive loads on a system. Many industrial and commercial  electrical system loads are inductive, meaning they require reactive power (kVAR) to sustain a magnetic field needed in order for the equipment to operate, in addition to the kW which they use to perform work.  The larger the portion of a facility’s load that is inductive, the higher its kVAR draw from the utility and the lower its power factory will be. The loading of this type of equipment also plays an important role in a facility’s power factor.

Remotely controlled capacitor banks

A door mounted microprocessor controller with optional communications capabilities via a Modbus RS-485 (additional communication protocols supported via Eaton PXG900) allows users to remotely control the capacitors connected to the AutoVAR 300.

Easily meet power factor target values

The load is monitored so that the AutoVAR 300 can automatically bring individual capacitors in and out, as required to meet the necessary power factor. CTs can be installed in single ended or main-tie-main configurations to ensure that the capacitor bank can be installed in any environment. We utilize split core multi-ratio multi-tap current transformers (CTs), indoor rated with 600 V insulated core.
